Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

Edited 7/23.

So, I first published this post half-asleep Saturday morning at 9am, which is when I finished.  🙂

I’ve thought about it a bit more, and here are some musings.  Don’t worry – there are no real spoilers.

  • It’s much darker than the rest of the series.  Which, given the progression, is not surprising.  But there is a lightness that’s usually in the series that is much rarer in this book
  • Prisoner of Azcaban, Half Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows are the best of the series.  Thinking about it more, I really can’t say which is my favorite of the three – the tones are so different between them.
  • I’m sad it’s over.  It’s pretty amazing that the same book gets kids excited and also has co-workers slamming doors saying, “Don’t tell me how it ends!!”  Hats off to Ms. Rowling..

Original post:

I’m done. Great last book of the series. Have to admit it’s not my favorite – I think I liked Prisioner of Azcaban or the Half Blood Prince more.

But loved it. 🙂 And sad that the Harry Potter series is now done.

  1. I enjoyed it too, it was a really good (and surprisingly quick) read.

Azkhaban I think had the tallest order to fill (a big departure from earlier in the series in size, depth, a lot of hype) and did spectacularly well.

I think the school-year flow really detracted from the later books, even DH for some reason tried to keep pace with what was happening at school with the seasons. This leads to some filler that wasn’t needed for build-up.

JK had the last chapter written about 10 years ago, it puts it in place and really shows how much she’s grown over the past decade as a writer.

I can’t say much about what I liked without being spoilerish. The opening was very exciting and even touching, and some later parts were also quite moving. Well worth the money.
